Two books of condolence have been opened in Shannon for newlywed Brian O’Callaghan-Westropp who died tragically while on his honeymoon in Greece.
The popular 46-year-old charity worker, who was originally from Clare, lost his life in the wildfires in Greece that have killed at up to 81 people and injured almost 200 others. Brian’s wife Zoe is recovering in hospital from her injuries.
Brian and his wife Zoe Holohan were on honeymoon in the coastal town of Mati when the fires hit. The couple got married just last week.
Mr O’Callaghan-Westropp’s tragic death was confirmed by the Department of Foreign Affairs last night.
Books of Condolence will be opened on Friday at 12 noon in The Jubilee Chapel of Mary Immaculate Church in Shannon where it will be available until 12 noon on Sunday.
Another book will be available to sign from Friday at 3pm in SS John & Paul Church until 1pm on Sunday.
“As a mark of respect and to show solidarity with his wife Zoe and family, we are offering you the opportunity to sign a Book of Condolence in our Churches, beginning Friday 27th July and continuing throughout the weekend,” according to the Parish website.
Brian worked as a volunteer with Blood Bikes East, a charity organisation that provides a free emergency medical transport service between the hospitals, clinics and medical establishments in Dublin city and the greater Dublin region. Volunteers deliver Blood, Blood Products, Medical Equipment, Breast Milk and any other medical items as required.
The group has been paying tribute to their colleague on Facebook.
“We are beyond devastated at the confirmation that the fires in Greece took Brian from us.
A diligent colleague and dear friend, we will miss Brian’s huge personality and infectious smile. His no-nonsense, can-do approach to the work of volunteering meant that he helped BBE to become the professional organisation we are today.
Despite it being a year and 3 months as a BBE Volunteer, it feels like he was involved for so much longer, and his influence will last for decades to come.
Thank you Brian for everything, you leave us bereft but better for having known you! Rest In Peace now our friend, your work is done.
Finally, we send our deepest condolences to Zoe, his wife, and his family and friends,” the post said.
I am deeply saddened at confirmation of the death of an Irish citizen in Greece. This is such a terrible tragedy, my thoughts are with the families and friends who have requested privacy.
