U.S. President Donald Trump looks increasingly likely to visit Ireland in September to coincide with the staging of the Irish Open at his family’s golf course in West Clare.
While still not formally confirmed, weekend reports from Washington suggest that Mr Trump will arrive in Ireland for a two-day visit on September 12th. It’s also not clear whether it will be a private trip or an official visit which could include a meeting with the Taoiseach in Dublin.
According to RTÉ, it’s also not known whether President Catherine Connolly will meet with Mr Trump as his trip to Ireland may not a formal or State visit. Any such visit will require a substantial security presence at Shannon Airport and in the vicinity of Doonbeg.
The Irish Open is scheduled to take place in Doonbeg between September 9th and 13th. It’s expected Mr Trump will arrive in Ireland in time for the final two days of the tournament after attending the 25th anniversary of the 911 attacks in the US.
Last month Mr Trump indicated he might visit Doonbeg for the Irish Open saying at the time ‘I think I’m going to come over, and I’m going to see it.’
Preparations for the Irish Open are well underway in Doonbeg with several marquees already erected on site.
