Following the successful delivery of a new Level 7 EV Technology programme in 2024, the first of its kind in Ireland, Shannon Chamber Skillnet in collaboration with the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) delivered a second programme this year, which, once again, attracted the attention of garages and mechanics throughout Ireland.
The programme, co-created by both entities and industry partners, was prompted by increasing sales of hybrid and battery electric vehicles. Its purpose is to equip motor mechanics with a detailed knowledge and understanding of hybrid and battery electric vehicle technologies, give them the ability to analyse high voltage electric vehicle condition, and assess the risks involved while implementing the skills to diagnose and repair high voltage electric vehicle systems in line with European electrical safety standards.
The programme, which was co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the European Social Fund ESF+, and facilitated by Shannon Chamber Skillnet, ran over 10 weeks, incorporating weekly three-hour sessions, delivered online for nine weeks, with a final two-day in-person workshop in TUS Coonagh, Co. Limerick.
The concluding in-person workshop provided participants with the opportunity to apply their learning in a practical setting, focusing on high-voltage component assessment, risk analysis, and safe repair techniques.
Twenty-two mechanics from Clare, Limerick, Cork, Carlow, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Tipperary, Waterford, and Westmeath, participated in the programme.
Commenting on the programme, Shannon Chamber CEO Helen Downes said: “Shannon Chamber, via its Skillnet business network, was delighted to, once again, collaborate with TUS in delivering this trail-blazing course. Equipping motor mechanics with the skills necessary to diagnose and repair high-voltage electric vehicle systems, which are so essential in the drive to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels, complements the work being doing via the Mid-West Sustainability Network to develop an ethos of sustainability in the region.”
Seán Conway, Programme Leader, TUS added: “This programme stands alone in Ireland as the only Level 7 QQI EV qualification designed specifically for working mechanics and automotive technicians, combining flexible online learning with hands-on, workshop-based training. Developed with industry to address the national EV skills gap, it enables participants to upskill without taking time out of their working day. Successful learners are awarded a Level 7 Special Purpose Award Certificate from TUS, recognising advanced EV expertise and real-world readiness.”
