Clare Museum will host the last of its current series of public lectures on Wednesday 15th May at 7.30 pm.
Maeve Sikora, Keeper of Irish Antiquities, National Museum of Ireland, will give a talk titled ‘Rediscovering the Derreen Hoard: a ninth century hoard of vessels from Co. Clare’.
In 1938 and 1960, during turfcutting, two important archaeological discoveries were made in Derreen, Co. Clare. The talk will explore the story of a find of early medieval vessels from Co. Clare and bring together two different finds from the same bog.
Through scientific analysis of the hoard carried out at the National Museum of Ireland, recent fieldwork by National Museum staff to the locality, and the help of the relatives of the finders, the collection can now be fully understood in its context.
Two of the vessels are on display at Clare Museum, where a large loan of Clare objects from the Irish Antiquities and Irish Folklife Divisions of the National Museum are already on long-term display.
Admission is free, but as there is expected to be a high level of interest, those wishing to attend should book a seat through the following email address: claremuseum@clarecoco.ie
