Winter Lecture Series resumes at Clare Museum

The Winter Lecture Series at Clare Museum resumes on Wednesday, 17th January, with a talk by Mary Cahill on ‘The Mooghaun Hoard: Making Clare great in the Bronze Age – the story of the 1854 ‘Great Clare Find’’.

Mary Cahill is a former Keeper of Irish Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland and is a leading expert on the Bronze Age in Europe.

Sometimes called the ‘Mooghaun North Hoard’ or the ‘Great Clare Find’, this important Bronze Age hoard was found near Newmarket-on-Fergus in March 1854 during the building of the railway line. It is considered one of the most significant Bronze Age hoards of gold ever found north of the Alps.

Mary Cahill’s lecture will bring to life the story of this truly remarkable collection of objects, which are of national and international significance. The Mooghaun Hoard is a very special part of County Clare’s rich history and heritage, and we are fortunate to welcome a speaker of Mary’s expertise to explain the items’ importance.”

The talk begins at 7:30pm and admission is free of charge. While entry is free, there is likely to be a high level of interest in the talk, so those attending are asked to book a seat in advance by email.

*Telephone bookings will not be accepted.

*In the coming months there will be further lectures at Clare Museum on: The GAA in 100 objects; Hair Hurling Balls; Clare connections in the Army Athletic Association in the 1920s and 1930s; and the 9th century Derreen Hoard from County Clare.
