The Rehabilitation of the runway at Shannon Airport by RPS has been shortlisted in the Engineering Project of the Year Award category.
The forthcoming Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards 2018 are sponsored by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
In summer 2017, Shannon Airport Authority (SAA) carried out the rehabilitation of 75% of its main runway. This occurred within extremely tight night time possession windows to avoid interference with the airport’s activities. RPS carried out the detailed design, tender process and site supervision for the works on this critical piece of national infrastructure on behalf of SAA. RPS used its extensive aviation experience to design an economic and grooved marshall asphalt runway, complete with new sustainable LED aeronautical ground lighting. A high-quality runway was successfully and safely delivered ahead of programme and within the project budget.
Engineers Ireland is now encouraging the public to now vote online for what they consider to be the best overall national Engineering Project of the Year before the midnight deadline of Friday, November 2nd.
In addition to the Rehabilitation of Runway 06-24 at Shannon Airport, those shortlisted in this category include:
Kevin Street Garda Headquarters by Atkins
M17/M18 Gort to Tuam Motorway PPP by Barry Transportation and Arup
Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme by Irish Water in association with Kerry County Council, Nicholas O’Dwyer, TOBIN Consulting Engineers and Glan Agua
Northern Spire Bridge by Roughan & O’Donovan, Buro Happold, Farrans and Victor Buyck
BXD 400 – Luas Cross City by Sisk Steconfer JV
The Engineering Project of the Year Award is just one of twelve category awards which will be presented at the forthcoming Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards. The awards, held in association with ESB, are presented annually in recognition of the achievements of engineers that have demonstrated exceptional engineering skills. As well as identifying leaders within the engineering industry, the awards provide an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the invaluable contribution the engineering profession makes to society.
In what is the ninth year of the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards, Caroline Spillane, Engineers Ireland Director General, highlighted the quality of entries: “The Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards showcase and celebrate the pioneering and innovative work that is carried out by Irish engineers both at home and abroad. The Rehabilitation of Runway 06-24 at Shannon Airport embodies real engineering initiative and skill and sets a very high standard in its category.
“I would encourage the Clare public to now get involved and to have their say in the Engineering Project of the Year Award category and to vote online for the engineering project they think has made the greatest impact on society over the last 12 months before the midnight deadline on Friday, 2 November”.
Pat O’Doherty, ESB Chief Executive, said: “The strength and quality of the projects shortlisted embody real engineering excellence and ingenuity. They remind us once again of evolving nature of contemporary engineering and the impact that the engineering profession has on the daily lives of families across this island.
“Engineers have a critical role to play in addressing the challenges facing the world today and they continue to make an incredibly valuable contribution to communities and economies worldwide. Engineers are problem solvers and innovators delivering solutions for society and this is why it is so important that we continue to promote engineering as a career choice, to ensure we have the skills necessary to meet our long-term needs as society.”
