Clare’s first public dog park has been officially opened at Shannon at a unique setting of an urban wood at Illaunmanagh.
The dog park provides a safe, dedicated space for dogs and their owners to enjoy recreation, exercise and community connection. The public dog park is 0.65 of an acre, or 2,650m2 in size.
The new amenity in Shannon offers an opportunity for dog owners to engage in physical activity with their pets. The park includes ramps, tunnels and obstacles for dogs to enjoy.
The provision of such a facility offers a safe and engaging space for dog owners to bond with their pets while ensuring their dogs get their necessary exercise.
Shannon Municipal District Councillors funded this project from their 2026 General Municipal Allocation, while funding was also received from the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment under the Dog Control Support Initiative.
The new dog park aims to encourage responsible pet ownership while enhancing local recreational amenities.
Cathaoirleach of Shannon Municipal District, Cllr Michael Begley, said, “I am delighted to officially open County Clare’s first public dog park. This fantastic facility represents an important investment in community wellbeing and recognises the important role that pets play in many families’ lives. The park provides a safe and enjoyable environment for dogs while creating a new social space where people can come together and as a result enhance the sense of community for dog owners.”
Senior Executive Officer at Shannon Municipal District, Suzanne Clifford, said, “This exciting development responds to growing demand from local dog owners for dedicated recreational spaces where pets can exercise safely off-leash.”
Director of Finance, Investment and Enterprise at Clare County Council, Noeleen Fitzgerald, said, “It is set to become a popular destination for local residents and visitors alike, supporting active lifestyles and promoting responsible dog ownership across Shannon and beyond.”
There are also plans for a further dog park to be developed on the East of the Shannon Municipal District.
