Man due in court after major airport drugs seizure

A man is due to appear in court this afternoon following the seizure of an estimated €4.2m of drugs at Shannon Airport yesterday.

The man in his 40s was detained following of an intelligence-led operation during which Revenue Officers seized 210 Kilograms of suspected Cannabis Herb, with an estimated value of approximately €4,200,000.

The seizure was made as a result of a joint operation conducted by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB), Clare Divisional Drug Unit and Revenue’s Customs Service.

The man was arrested by An Garda Síochána and is currently detained in a Garda Station in County Clare under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

Gardaí have confirmed that the has been charged with offences contrary to Section 3 & 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977/84 and will be brought before Ennis District Court this afternoon.

The seized drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Investigations are ongoing.”
