A motorist had a lucky escape this morning after losing control and crashing into two barriers.

The collision occurred at around 9.00am on the Ennis to Gort stretch of the M18 about two kilometres north of Crusheen.

The single-vehicle crash happened following a heavy downpour of hailstone which left roads in many parts of the county in a treacherous condition.

The car spun out of control and struck the central jersey barrier before careering backwards into the metal roadside crash barrier.

Units of the fire brigade from Ennis and Gort responded to the incident along with gardaí and ambulance paramedics.

The driver, the sole occupant of the car, was assessed at the scene by HSE paramedics but did not require hospitalisation.

Traffic was restricted to one lane for a time until the car could be safely removed from the scene.

Meanwhile, motorists are being reminded to drive to the weather conditions as Met Éireann warns of further cold weather and possible snow showers.

Temperatures could drop to as low as -4C in places tonight so motorists are advised to remember the dangers of black ice.
