The body of a woman has been recovered from the sea in Co Clare.
The alarm was raised at around 11.30am when a body was reported to have been seen in the sea close to Hags Head at the southern end of the Cliffs of Moher.
It’s understood that tourists out enjoying the cliff walking trail raised the alarm after seeing the woman fall to her death.
Gardaí were quickly alerted while the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was requested to launch their boat and undertake the recovery operation. Other team members proceeded to the area by road.
On arrival at the scene, Coast Guard volunteers quickly located a body a few hundred metres off-shore. The remains were recovered from the water the taken back to Doolin Coast Guard station.
After being formally pronounced dead, the body was removed to University Hospital Limerick where a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out.
The victim is understood to be in her 40s and from North Clare while the circumstances of the tragedy are being investigated by Gardaí.
Earlier this month, the body of a woman was recovered from the sea at the Cliffs of Moher. It’s understood the alarm was raised after an abandoned car was found nearby. The woman’s body was recovered from the water at around 7.00pm by the Doolin Coast Guard.
That death is being treated as a personal tragedy.
