Early morning commuters faced tailbacks and diversions this morning following a series of incidents on the M18 motorway.

A car fire and two multi-vehicle collisions all occurred in a short period of time in the southbound lanes of the motorway between the Newmarket on Fergus and Shannon interchanges.

A car fire was reported at around 7.30am when emergency services were alerted to a vehicle on fire on the off-ramp at Junction 9.

Gardaí and two units of the fire brigade from Shannon Town responded to the incident along with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) motorway maintenance crews.

Soon afterwards, emergency crews were diverted to a three-car collision reported just a short distance away.

While crews were still dealing with that collision, another crash was reported further back the motorway close to Junction 10 at Newmarket on Fergus.

Two cars had collided in the overtaking lane near the Newmarket on Fergus off-ramp.

All three incidents had been cleared by 10.00pm and are being investigated by Gardaí from Shannon.

No one was injured in any of the incidents.
