Sections of the M18 motorway had to be closed for a time this morning following separate incidents.

The first incident happened at around 9.55am northbound at junction 13 (Tulla) and involved a car that burst into flames.

The driver of the Nissan Micra managed to pull her car into the hard shoulder before the fire took hold in the engine area.

There were two occupants in the car, believed to be a woman and her young son who managed to escape uninjured from the vehicle along with their dog. They also had the awareness to step behind the crash barrier, a safe distance from the burning car, until emergency services arrived.

Gardaí were first to respond to the incident followed by units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Ennis station. Additional fire service resources were sent from Shannon Town.

Traffic was diverted off the motorway away from the scene at junction 13 while motorists were not allowed access the motorway from the Tulla Road roundabout.

Traffic Infrastructure Ireland (TII) personnel also attended the incident and the motorway was reopened once the vehicle had been recovered from the scene and the area made safe again.

A short time later, emergency services were called to another incident on the motorway.

A truck had shed part of its load of topsoil which blocked part of the route southbound at Carrigoran near Newmarket on Fergus. Units of the fire brigade from Ennis and Shannon attended the scene along with Gardaí and TII motorway maintenance crews.

Traffic was diverted away from the area while machinery was brought in to clear the motorway. The route was reopened about an hour later.
