A flight from South America to Europe diverted to Shannon Airport overnight after a passenger was reported to have fallen ill.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight 268 was travelling from Paramaribo in Suriname to Amsterdam in the Netherlands at the time.
Shortly before 3.30am, while the Boeing 777-306(ER) jet was about 100 kilometres south of Ireland, the crew declared a medical emergency.
The flight crew, who had been in contact with air traffic controllers in Ireland, sought clearance to divert to Shannon Airport requesting that emergency medical services be alerted. The crew reported they had an elderly female passenger on board who required urgent medical attention.
The flight was cleared to divert to Shannon and landed safely at 4.05am. The aircraft was met at the terminal building by airport staff and National Ambulance Service paramedics.
The passenger was transported to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
The flight continued its journey to Amsterdam at 5.40am.
