The Galway RNLI Lifeboat was called out to assist a lone lobster fisherman whose boat got into difficulty this afternoon.

The alarm was raised at around 3.00pm when the skipper contacted the Irish Coast Guard by radio.

The man reported that he had lost power off the Clare coat and and was at risk of running onto rocks close to the Flaggy Shore about a kilometre west of New Quay.

The volunteer crew of the Galway RNLI Lifeboat raced to the scene about 12 kilometres south of their station in Galway Docks.

The Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 115, was also tasked to provide assistance.

When the lifeboat arrived at the scene, the crew found that the skipper had dropped his anchor which managed to hold the boat in place.

The lobster boat was taken on tow to the pier at nearby New Quay.

The man was unharmed and thanked the lifeboat crew and the Coast Guard for their assistance.

The operation was coordinated by watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard marine rescue sub centre on Valentia Island in Kerry.
