Man dies despite efforts to save him

A man has died in hospital after he was pulled from a river in Co Clare late yesterday.

Members of the public raised the alarm at around 5.15pm after they saw the man in his 50’s fall from his boat close to a local fishing club near Killaloe.

Two people managed to get the man out of the water and began efforts to resuscitate him.

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard arrived at the scene within minutes and continued attempts to save the man.

The casualty, believed to be from Co Tipperary, was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick by the Shannon based search and rescue helicopter.

It’s understood that the man may have suffered a heart attack while on his boat and had been attempting to get ashore when he fell into the water.

A postmortem examination is due to be carried however it’s believed the man died of natural causes.
