A man died this morning after falling into the water at Terryglass on Lough Derg.
The alarm was raised at around 9.20am when a man was reported to have fallen into the harbour. The man in his 60’s, believed to be from Limerick, was out walking with his wife at the time.
Watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard marine rescue sub centre on Valentia Island mounted a search and rescue operation.
The Shannon based search and rescue helicopter – Rescue 115 – and the Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat were mobilised to the scene while the Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was also alerted and travelled to the area by road.
Gardaí, an ambulance and the fire service also rushed to the scene.
The man was taken from the water by the crew of a boat that was in the area at the time. Efforts to resuscitate the man began immediately.
The man was airlifted from the scene to University Hospital Limerick but was pronounced dead a short time later.
