A local shop in Kilrush remained open after hours and provided torches to members of the public to assist them in the search.

It’s understood the alarm was raised when family members called to the 82-year-old’s home at O’Gorman Street in Kilrush. It’s believed the man’s family became concerned for his safety when they heard his dog barking inside the house but there was no sign of the pensioner.

Gardaí mounted a search that involved a number of local clubs and organisations including the GAA and Chamber of Commerce.

Following reports that a person fitting the man’s description was see walking alone near the sea at Cappagh, the local volunteer RNLI unit launched their boat and carried out shore search. Other members walked the shoreline in search of the missing man.

The Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard was also requested to assist in the search.

Gardaí in Kilrush have acknowledged the support from members of the public for their assistance and help in the search.

In a Facebook post, Gardaí offered “particular thanks to Kilrush GAA, Kilrush Chamber of Commerce and a special mention of thanks to the staff of SuperValu Kilrush for staying open and providing torches to searchers.”
