The M18 was closed for a time this afternoon following a collision that involved a 4×4 vehicle and trailer carrying hay bales.
The incident happened at around 3.30am in the northbound carriageway just before Junction 10 at Newmarket on Fergus.
The 4×4 and trailer appeared to have lost control and crashed into the central barrier partially blocking the overtaking lane. Weather conditions in the area at the time were poor.

Units of the fire brigade from Shannon and local Gardaí responded to the incident while additional units of the fire brigade from Ennis were also mobilised to the incident.
Traffic managed to filter through the scene for a time before fire crews implemented emergency traffic management procedures to ensure the safety of personnel dealing with the incident.
Fire crews used their vehicles to form a rolling roadblock to bring northbound traffic to a safe stop while efforts were made to remove the vehicle and trailer from the scene.
No one was injured in the incident while the motorway was reopened at around 5.00pm.
The collision happened in almost the same location as a similar incident involving a vehicle transporting hay bales in 2016.
