Player airlifted to hospital after hurling match injury

A hurling match in East Clare was abandoned this evening after a player was injured and had to be airlifted to hospital.

It’s understood that the player sustained an injury during the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship clash of Bodyke and Whitegate which was abandoned following the incident.

The National Ambulance Service was called to the scene in Scarriff while the Irish Coast Guard was also requested to assist.

The Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter, operating under the callsign Medevac 115, was tasked to undertake the medical evacuation. The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was also mobilised to the incident.

Ambulance paramedics assessed the treated the casualty at the scene while awaiting the arrival of the helicopter. Killaloe Coast Guard volunteers secured a landing zone at Scarriff GAA grounds for the helicopter.

Once the patient had been treated and prepared for transportation, Coast Guard personnel transferred the casualty from the ambulance to the helicopter.

The player was then flown to University Hospital Limerick for further treatment.
