Shannon security alert declared a false alarm

A security alert at an office block near Shannon Airport this evening has been confirmed to be a false alarm.

Shortly after 6.00pm, a worker spotted a suspicious object on the ground outside Shannon Airport House in the Shannon Industrial Estate.

Gardaí were alerted and uniformed officers along with armed detectives responded to the scene. Severa who were still at work in their offices were evacuated to a nearby carpark.

Gardaí found a small green metal box on the ground near the front door of the building.

The Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team based in Cork were alerted.

Photos of the box sent were sent to bomb disposal experts to see if they could determine whether the box was a threat.

A closer inspection of the box established that it was an old ammunition storage box and only contained tools.

The ‘suspicious’ box was one similar to this one.

Its not known whether the box was left at the scene intentionally or accidentally by someone who had been carrying out work in the building.

The area was declared safe at around 7.15pm and the box removed from the scene.

Workers were allowed returned to their offices after Gardaí confirmed the incident to be a false alarm.
