Woman hospitalised after boat incident on Lough Derg

A woman is recovering in hospital after she sustained a serious hand injury on board a boat on Lough Derg this afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted at around 4.00pm. It was reported that a woman on board a cruiser north of Killaloe near Twomilegate had sustained a hand injury.

It’s understood that the occupants of the boat raised the alarm themselves and continued towards Killaloe to meet emergency services.

Watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue sub centre in Kerry mounted a rescue operation. The Killaloe unit of the Coast Guard was alerted along with the National Ambulance Service.

The Killaloe Coast Guard team launched their boat from Pier Head in Killaloe and reached the scene by 4.15pm. After locating the vessel, a Coast Guard crew member was transferred to the cruiser to assess the casualty and administer first aid.

The boat was then escorted back to the Coast Guard based in Killaloe where shore team members and ambulance paramedics were waiting to take the patient into their care. It’s understood the woman sustained injuries to two fingers.

She was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
