Woman hospitalised after fall in Storm Jake

A woman is recovering in hospital after she was injured by high winds at the Cliffs of Moher in Co Clare.

Storm Jake continues to batter the area where winds have been gusting to over 130kmh for most of the day.

Management at the Cliffs erected warning signs at 7.45am advising visitors not to venture onto the cliffs walks.

At midday, staff invoked their Status Red protocol and evacuated all persons from the site however dozens of people continued to defy the warnings.

It’s understood the woman in her 60’s was on one of the cliff walks when she was blown to the ground.

An ambulance from Ennistymon and rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the scene.

The woman was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment for a head injury.

A Cliffs of Moher Visitor spokeswoman said: “We appeal to the public to heed the warnings issued by the visitor centre operation. We do not take the decision to go to Orange or Red Status lightly but do so in the interests of the safety of visitors and staff alike.”
