Meelick has benefited from extensive road improvement and resurfacing works as part of Clare County Council’s summer roadworks programme.

Roads in the townlands of Knockalisheen, Mountgordon and Woodcock Hill have been resurfaced with tar and stone chippings. Further works are planned on a section of the Old Cratloe Road which is prone to surface-water flooding and Brennan’s Cross.

Meelick has shown steady population increases in recent censuses and the local roads’ network is heavily used as a ‘rat run’ by commuters travelling to and from their places of work in Limerick and Shannon. All of this has lead to a heavy usage of Meelick roads’ network. The improvement works taking place over the course of this summer should ensure that the roads in the area are capable of safely carrying traffic for the next number of years.

Temporary signage throughout the village is advising motorists to drive at 25km/hr. In the weeks and months ahead Clare County Council will temporarily close a short section of the Old Cratloe Road so that it can be raised higher to mitigate against future flooding.

Further works to improve Brennan’s Cross will be undertaken vis-a-vis a Dept. of Transport approved Low Cost Safety Scheme. The specific works to be carried out at Brennan’s Cross have yet to be determined but a number of options are currently being appraised by Clare County Council’s Road Design Office.
