With fine weather forecast for this weekend, the last full one before some secondary schools return late next week, a local councillor is urging members of the public to take extra care when enjoying Clare’s coastline and waterways.
In particular, Cllr. Rita McInerney is highlighting the serious dangers of swimming at Doughmore Beach, Doonbeg, which is well known for its spectacular scenery, surfing, horse riding, and walking opportunities.
Clare County Council has prominent signage at the beach advising against swimming due to powerful currents and shifting sands that make the area treacherous.
“Doughmore is a world-class beach for surfing, horse-riding, and for simply enjoying the beauty of the Wild Atlantic,” said Cllr. McInerney. “However, it is not a safe beach for swimming. Unfortunately, on very warm days, when other beaches are crowded, I have seen people, including families with young children, entering the water. I want to be very clear: this is highly dangerous and can put lives at risk.”
Cllr. McInerney is also appealing to local residents, businesses, and accommodation providers to help spread the word to visitors who may be unfamiliar with Doughmore’s hazards. “Many people travelling here for the first time may not realise the dangers,” she said. “A word of advice from a local or host, even if not well received at times, can make all the difference in preventing a tragedy. We all have a role to play in keeping people safe.”
Cllr. McInerney also reminded people to heed safety signage at all beaches, lakes, and rivers across the county, to take care when playing near the water, and to always wear a lifejacket when using any watercraft.
“We want everyone to enjoy the end of the summer without incident,” she said. “Please do not put yourself in a situation where the services of our hard working emergency responders, who are already under significant pressure, are needed.”
