Over €3 million is currently being invested on improvement works at the wastewater treatment plant in Shannon and on cleaning and surveying the sewers and wider wastewater network in the town.
Irish Water, working in partnership with Clare County Council are behind the substantial investment which will help meet the wastewater services needs for domestic and commercial customers in Shannon Town and the surrounding area now and into the future.
Survey work on the town’s sewer network is now complete. Over 30km of wastewater pipes were cleaned and surveyed as part of this €600,000 project in order to identify any repair, upgrade or replacement needs on the network. The information gained from this survey will help identify any illegal discharges to the network and also allow Irish Water to prioritise works needed to address issues with the wastewater network in the town.
As part of the ongoing upgrade works, it is proposed to clean the existing Domestic Aeration Basins at Tradaree Wastewater Treatment Plant. These works are scheduled to take place from this Monday, January 9, and will continue for a period of two weeks, up to January 23.
While this work is being carried out, some areas adjacent to the wastewater treatment plant may experience temporary odours as a result of the cleaning of the tanks.
However Irish Water anticipates that these potential odours will be confined to the wastewater plant only and that works should not impact on the network or outlying pump stations, or the general locality of Shannon. Irish Water wishes to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
