Rescue 115 completes long-range medevac operation

The Shannon-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter completed a long-range medical evacuation (medevac) off the South West coast overnight.

Rescue 115 departed its base at Shannon Airport at 1.24am to airlift a crew member off a commercial vessel 150 nautical miles (277 kilometres) South West of Ireland.

The helicopter landed at Castletownbere in Cork to refuel before continuing to meet the vessel.

The crew member was airlifted to Cork University Hospital where Rescue 115 landed shortly after 5.30am before returning safely to Shannon at 6.40am.

The operation was mounted and coordinated by watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre (MRCC) on Valentia Island in Kerry.
