Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney has welcomed proposals to reduce the speed limit on a section of the N68 Ennis to Kilrush Road at Darragh, saying local campaigners deserve credit for their efforts in securing action.
The proposed changes, published by Clare County Council as part of the National Speed Limit Review, would see the speed limit at Darragh reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h.
Deputy Cooney said the move followed years of campaigning by local residents and road users concerned about safety at the location, which he described as an accident blackspot.
He said, “I want to acknowledge the local campaigners in Darragh who have fought long and hard for action to be taken on this dangerous stretch of road. Their persistence and determination in highlighting the need for improved road safety deserves great credit.”
“This section of the N68 has been an accident blackspot for far too long, and local people have repeatedly raised concerns about the risks faced by motorists using this road.”
“Reducing the speed limit is an important step that can help make this road safer, although it must form part of a wider package of measures, including improved signage, road markings and any further engineering works required.”
The draft Special Speed Limit Bye-Laws also include minor amendments to the speed limit locations on the M18/N18 motorway off-ramps to reflect the position of existing speed limit signs.
Members of the public have until 5pm on Monday, 31 August to make submissions on the proposals.
