Cruiser with engine problem towed to safety by Coast Guard

Volunteers from the Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard responded to assist the skipper of a vessel that was reported to suffered engine problems on Lough Derg this morning.

The team was alerted at 9.45am by watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry.

A boat crew launched from the Coast Guard based at Pier Head Killaloe and travelled the short distance to the vessel’s reported position.

The 34 foot cruiser was located about 1km north of Killaloe. The skipper of the vessel had dropped anchor to prevent the vessel from drifting aground.

On arrival at the scene, a Coast Guard crew member was transferred on board the casualty vessel and a tow line was set up. The cruiser was then taken on tow to Killaloe where it was safely moored with the assistance of a Coast Guard shore team.

After dealing with the incident, the team was stood down at 10.30am and returned to base.

Just last week, the Killaloe crew responded to two similar incidents in the space of 24 hours.
