The Limerick and Clare Educational Training Board had applied to extend the existing secondary school buildings at Ennis Community College by a total combined area of 4175sq.m.

The plan proposed works consisting of a stand alone three storey extension to Harmony Row including General Classrooms and Specialist Rooms, Circulation Areas, Plant Rooms, Dining Hall and associated kitchen/storage.

Plans also include a sportshall, fitness centre with associated changing and storage areas and the demolition of an existing Gael-Choláiste building, existing sportshall, prefabricated classrooms and technical storage.

School principal Brian O’Donoghue said: “We are thrilled with the decision to grant permission for this development. The project will see a build of over 4,100 square metres. It includes multiple classrooms and specialist rooms such as science labs. Also included is a full size state of the art sports hall. We have been in Ennis since 1938 and this is a very significant development which will greatly benefit our students and the community of Ennis.”

Granting permission for the development, Clare County Council has attached 13 conditions to the decision.

Construction is expected to begin in the coming months.
