Sixteen days on from his resignation as manager of the Clare Senior Hurling team, Davy Fitzgerald has taken on a new role.
Davy was unanimously ratified as the new Wexford Senior Hurling manager on Friday evening at a special meeting of the County Board in Enniscorthy. The Sixmilebridge man has been appointed on a three year contract with a review to take place at the end of the 2018 season. He succeeds Liam Dunne who served for the past five years in the position, Dunne was praised by club delegates for his professionalism and dedication.
A selection committee comprised of Diarmuid Devereux (County Chairman), Margaret Doyle (County Secretary), Dermot Howlin, Philip Howlin, George Foley, and John Conran interviewed several contenders for the role but they were most impressed by the 2013 All-Ireland winning manager who they met on Thursday evening in Portlaoise.
Fitzgerald said of the appointment “I am really excited about this opportunity with Wexford, and I was honoured to be asked to accept the job. It’s a new challenge for me, and I’m really looking forward to it”. No details have yet been revealed as to who will be in the two-time All-Ireland winner’s management but former U21 boss JJ Doyle is confirmed to be in his backroom team.
According to County Board Chairman Diarmuid Devereux Davy has already targeted League promotion. “On behalf of Wexford County Board and Wexford GAA supporters, I welcome Davy to County Wexford. He is an ideal fit for our young senior hurling squad, and I am excited about the prospects for the future. The initial aim will be for Wexford to move from Division 1B of the National Hurling League up to Division 1A, and then to build on that”.
