Clare’s Diarmaid Nash bowed out of the Gaffney Memorial Open at the quarter-final stage.
GAA Handball’s 40×20 season kicked in Ballaghaderreen and St Coman’s as the top Irish players in the sport participated in the John Gaffney Memorial. Two representatives from the Banner County were competing with Tuamgraney’s Diarmaid Nash eliminating his Kilkishen counterpart Colin Crehan in the last sixteen.
It was in the next stage that Nash’s involvement in this year’s competition came to a close. He was defeated by the smallest of margins in a tiebreaker to Armagh’s Charles Shanks losing 21-19, 7-21, 10-11.
While Diarmaid did not bring home any silverware in the opening competition of the year, he will be content with a last eight finish having been out of the sport for the past year having focused on his job as an investment analyst.
As the Gaffney Memorial reaches the semi-final stage; Shanks, Robbie McCarthy, Killian Carroll and Máirtín Ó Maoilchiaráin are the four handballers left standing.
