Traffic was left backed up past junction 10 for some time before motorists began to divert off the route via Newmarket on Fergus.

Fire crews later implemented an emergency traffic management system at junction 10 and diverted traffic off the motorway. A similar system was put in place at the scene to clear the traffic that had been held up following the collision.

The northbound lanes of the motorway were later closed from junction 9 (Shannon).

It’s understood that at least one person has been transported to hospital.

The vehicles involved in the incident have since been removed from the scene and the route fully reopened.
