A rescue operation was mounted on Lough Derg this morning following a report of fire on a vessel with two persons on board.
The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was alerted at around 11.35am and requested to respond to the scene off Carrowgar near Ogonnelloe about 8 kilometres north of their base at Pier Head, Killaloe.
Watch officers at the Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry had received a report that a fire had broken out in the engine compartment of a 22 foot vessel.
The Coast Guard rescue boat was quickly launched and as the crew made their way to the scene they received an update informing them that the fire was out but the boat was however left drifting without engine power.
The Killaloe boat took the casualty vessel on tow to Killaloe where a Coast Guard land crew was waiting to assist with the safe mooring of the boat. The two occupants were unharmed.
