An elderly tourist is being treated in hospital for what are understood to be serious head injuries he sustained in a fall while visiting North Clare this afternoon.
It’s understood that the 80-year-old man was part of a bus tour that had stopped at a popular viewing area at Poll Sallagh, Ballyreen on the main Doolin to Ballyvaughan coast road.
The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was tasked to the incident at around 4.00pm along with the National Ambulance Service.
On arrival at the scene, Doolin Coast Guard volunteers quickly located the casualty who had suffered a fall on the limestone pavement on the Atlantic side of the main road. The area is very popular with passing bus tour groups.
Coast Guard first responders assessed the casualty at the scene and made him comfortable until an ambulance arrived.
The injured man was extracted from the location by Coast Guard members and handed into the care of ambulance paramedics. The man was then transported by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
It’s believed that he was part of a 50-strong French tour group that had been visiting the area when the accident occurred.
