Second shout for Killaloe Coast Guard in 24 hours

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was called out this afternoon for the second time in 24 hours to assist a vessel in difficulty.

The alarm was raised at around 1.30pm when the Irish Coast Guard received a report that a 19 foot powerboat required assistance. The vessel, with two adults and two children on board, was reported to have lost power 1km south of Killaloe Bridge towards Parteen Weir.

It’s understood that the boat’s drive suffered damage after hitting rocks. The occupants made contact with the Coast Guard by phone and requested assistance reporting they were drifting into shallow water.

Watch officers at the Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry tasked the Killaloe unit of the service which launched its rescue boat from their base at Pier Head Killaloe.

The team made their way towards Patreen Weir and located the vessel south of Clarisford on the Clare shore.All on board were found to be safe, well and wearing lifejackets.

The rescue boat took the casualty vessel on tow back to Killaloe where a Coast Guard shore team as on hand to assist in the safe mooring of the vessel.

Today’s callout was the second in less than 24 hours for the Killaloe volunteer unit.

Yesterday, the team was called to assist  a 31 foot cruiser which suffered engine problems south of Scilly Island on Lough Derg. That boat was also towed to safety by the Coast Guard rescue boat.
