How to Transform your Home into a Festive Wonderland this Christmas

It might not seem like all that long ago that you were enjoying a summer barbecue, and long, balmy evenings in your local beer garden. But now that summer has finally drawn to a close, and autumn is well underway, it’s worth thinking about how you’re going to plan for Christmas, and ultimately get the best from it.

A memorable Christmas, more often than not, is one that generates the right atmosphere. That means that decorations are an absolute must. But exactly what kinds of decorations should you be considering?

Candles

When it comes to that all-important sense of cosiness, it’s quite difficult to dispense with real candles. The human brain has adapted to crave warmer light wavelengths, which is part of the reason that we enjoy sitting beside the fire.

Candles are a classic way of generating this light – but they obviously come with fire risks. If you want to make the home feel cosy without compromising on safety, then LED candles represent a great compromise.

Christmas Lights

Twinkling Christmas lights are synonymous with the season. You might favour warm white lights, which are cosier, or brilliant white ones (which can seem slightly more magical and otherworldly, or a little sterile, depending on your perspective). For the classic retro look, of course, you might favour multi-hued, flashing lights.

Cosy Textures

For a real sense of cosiness, the right textures can be invaluable. This goes especially if you’re decorating an otherwise sterile living room, with hard edges and bare metal. Woolly blankets, tartan prints, and throw cushions can all contribute immeasurably to the living area in your home. This is true not only during Christmas, but during Winter more broadly, too.

A Focal Point

A sense of visual hierarchy is essential in any room. A single large focal point will give the eye something to settle on, and combat the sense of chaos that can creep in when everything is competing for attention.

You can take advantage of this principle when you’re furnishing your living space. If you have a natural focal point that evokes warm, festive feelings, like a roaring fireplace, then the entire room will tend to feel that little bit more homely. If the focal point is a little sterile, or neutral, then dressing it up with some tinsel can make a big difference.

Of course, for many, the obvious solution is to install a new, explicitly festive focal point, in the form of a Christmas tree!
