Men across County Clare are being encouraged to take one small but very significant step towards better health and wellbeing as part of Men’s Health Week 2026, which takes place from June 15th – 21st.
Men’s Health Week in Clare is co-ordinated by Clare County Council as part of its Health and Wellbeing programme in partnership with stakeholders including the HSE, Mental Health Ireland, Men’s Development Network, Clare Sports Partnership, Clare FM and community groups. A week-long programme of activities, discussions and awareness initiatives has been organised across the county to support men in focusing on their health, making positive changes and accessing support where needed.
At the heart of the campaign is the County Clare ‘One Small Step’ Pledge, which encourages men to commit to a simple action to benefit their health. Men can take the pledge themselves, or it can be made on their behalf by a family member, friend or colleague with their permission. Participants will also have the chance to win prizes.
The initiative highlights that improving health does not always require major changes – small, consistent actions can make a meaningful difference over time.
Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Cllr Paul Murphy, said “Men’s Health Week reminds us that looking after our health doesn’t have to be complicated. Small steps such as walking more, getting a check-up, talking to someone or taking time to switch off can make a real difference.”
Senior Health Promotion & Improvement Officer, HSE Mid-West, Mary McMahon, said “Men’s Health Week is an opportunity to start important conversations. Small, realistic changes are often the most sustainable, and we hope the programme encourages men to take positive steps for both their physical and mental wellbeing.”
A highlight of the week is the Connect Café event in De Valera Library, Ennis, on Thursday, June 18 from 10.30am to 12 noon, offering a welcoming space for tea, coffee and conversation. Visitors can also view the Men’s Development Network Exhibition, showcasing the role of community support in men’s lives.
In addition, free health screening will take place at Kilrush Mart on Wednesday, June 24, from 11am to 2pm. Services will include blood pressure, pulse and diabetes checks. Kilrush Mart is located at Cappa Road, Kilrush, Co. Clare, V15 EV60, and screening will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Enquiries can be made to healthyclare@clarecoco.ie.
Joan Tarmey, Clare Healthy Ireland Co-ordinator, Clare County Council said “Partnership is key to the success of Men’s Health Week. By working together, we can reach men in different settings and encourage positive conversations that make a real impact. The addition of digital messaging in GP waiting rooms and hotels is novel and targeted at a captive audience”.
Information, health tips and wellbeing advice will be promoted throughout the week via social media, Clare FM, and digital screens in GP waiting rooms and hotels across the county.
Jason Murphy, Director of Services of Planning, Economic, Rural & Community Development, Clare County Council, added “The message is simple, I would encourage men to take one positive step. The pledge, events and discussions all aim to support men to engage with their health in a positive way.”
Throughout the week, Clare FM’s Morning Focus will feature a special interview series with expert guests covering topics such as mental wellbeing, stress, healthy eating, physical activity and community connection.
Men, their families and friends are encouraged to visit the Men’s Health Week webpage to take the One Small Step Pledge, explore events and access supports.
