A flight from the US to the Netherlands diverted to Shannon Airport early today after the crew declared a medical emergency over the North Atlantic.
United Airlines flight UA-946 was travelling from Washington to Amsterdam at the time.
While the flight was still over an hour west of Shannon, crew of the Boeing 767-300 jet advised air traffic controllers here that they wished to divert to Shannon. It’s understood the flight was originally due to divert to Dublin.
The flight landed at 5.28am and was met on arrival by airport fire and rescue crews who followed the aircraft along the runway and to the terminal building where airport staff and ambulance paramedics were standing by.
The flight resumed its journey to Amsterdam at around 6.50am.
Of the estimated 60 diversions or unschedule arrivals at Shannon so far this year, over a quarter have been medical emergencies.
