You may already have seen the extraordinary pianist, Yeol Eum Son in action at the BBC Proms.
In August, she took centre stage at a sold-out Royal Albert Hall, performing Gershwin’s Piano Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Now she joins Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO), performing the Mozart that brought her fame, in Dublin, Limerick and Cork (18-21 November).
One of South Korea’s finest exports, Son is a major figure in Korean musical life, recognised not only for her international performing career but also for her work as a broadcaster, writer and cultural figure. At eighteen she appeared with the New York Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel and went on to success at the world’s leading piano competitions.
At the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition, Son performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, which has since attracted an astonishing 32 million views online. She later recorded the concerto with the legendary Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
For Mozart Illuminated with Irish Chamber Orchestra she returns to the much-loved ‘Elvira Madigan’ concerto alongside Mozart’s dramatic Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor. The programme opens with the sparkling Divertimento in D major, written by the sixteen-year-old Mozart, directed by ICO Guest Leader, Hed Yaron Meyerson.
Yeol Eum Son and Irish Chamber Orchestra perform MOZART ILLUMINATED at Whyte Recital Hall, RIAM, Dublin, Thursday 19 November; University Concert Hall, Limerick, Friday 20 November; and St Michael’s Church, Blackrock, Cork, Saturday 21 November (in association with Cork Orchestral Society).
