Volunteers from the Doolin unit of the Coast Guard were requested to launch one of their rescue boats and proceed to the location where they soon recovered the body.

The remains were taken to the Coast Guard station at Doolin and formally handed over to Gardaí before being transported by hearse to University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination will take place.

Gardaí are now working to establish who the woman is so they can notify her next-of-kin.

A Garda spokesman confirmed: “The body of a woman, estimated to be in her 50s or 60s was recovered from the sea and taken to Doolin. A post-mortem examination will take place and we are working to identify this woman.”

Gardaí are appealing to anyone with any information to contact Ennistymon Garda Station on 065-707 2180.
