Clare Libraries has announced the launch of the My Little Library Initiative 2026, inviting children across County Clare who are starting primary school this September to visit their local library and collect a free book bag.
Each year, children finishing pre-school and beginning primary school are encouraged to call into their nearest branch library, where they can pick up a specially prepared book bag and take the opportunity to become library members.
Families are warmly encouraged to join Clare Libraries if they are not already members. Children will also receive a special My Little Library card wallet to keep their library card safe.
The initiative, funded by the Department of Children, Disability and Equality and delivered nationwide through local authorities, aims to strengthen the connection between young children, their families and their local library, while supporting the important transition from pre-school to primary school.
Acting Clare County Librarian, Cora Gunter, said, “Clare Libraries is delighted to once again take part in the My Little Library initiative. Starting primary school is a significant milestone for young children and their families, and we are proud to support them at this important stage.”
“Our libraries are welcoming, inclusive community spaces, and we look forward to meeting families across the county as they collect their book bags and begin their library journey.”
The book bags contain a selection of books for children to keep, covering themes such as starting school, making friends and understanding big emotions.
They also include helpful information and resources for parents to support their child’s transition to primary school, along with details of services and events available through Clare Libraries. Book bags are available in both English and Irish.
Since the initiative began in 2022, it has supported thousands of children nationwide in developing a love of reading and engaging with their local library service.
Children’s Librarian, Niamh O’Donovan, added, “Reading with children from an early age plays a vital role in their development, building confidence, language skills and imagination. The My Little Library book bags are a wonderful way to introduce children to books and stories, while also helping families feel supported as children move into primary school. We encourage all families in Clare to visit their local library and be part of this initiative.”
