West Clare, between the estuary of the River Shannon and the Atlantic Ocean, is a place of sheer beauty with dramatic cliffs, wide sandy beaches, sheltered bays, tranquil peatlands and hidden glens.
Wild West Clare – From the Shannon Dolphins to the Cliffs of Moher, written by Carsten Krieger, with an introduction by Katrina Costello and expert contributions from local geologists and wildlife experts, explores the area’s natural history and introduces its varied habitats and rich wildlife. And along the way, it provides sippets of history and folklore.
The book contains essays, wildlife viewpoints, a glossary and an index, and contains over 140 stunning photographs by Carsten Krieger. It is written to appeal to those new to naturewatching as well as experienced wildlife watchers, and contains much to interest people in West Clare.
‘Wild West Clare’ is the first book exploring the area’s natural history from its geology, habitats, flora and fauna to current environmental issues.
The book was written, photographed and designed by Carsten Krieger with contributions by Nick Larter (entomologist), Dr Eamon Doyle (geologist, Burren and Cliffs of Moher Unescoe Global Geopark), Mary Kate Bolger (marine biologist, Dolphinwatch Carrigaholt) and Trea and Kevin Heapes (Pure Space), and published by Bannerbooks.

Carsten Krieger is a photographer, videographer, author, graphic designer and naturalist based in Kilbaha on the Loop Head Peninsula. Since 2002 he has published more than 20 books on Ireland’s landscape, heritage, nature and wildlife – including the Irish Book Awards short-listed Wild Ireland – A Nature Journey from Shore to Peak, and Ten Thousand Years Deep – The Story of Ireland’s Peatlands – and has been working locally and nationally with nature conservation groups.
