Following a record number of entries in 2024, nominations are once again being sought for the tenth annual Clare Older People’s Volunteer of the Year Award.
Hosted by the Clare Older People’s Council and supported by Clare County Council through the Clare Age Friendly Programme, the award scheme celebrates the remarkable contribution made by individuals who have selflessly dedicated their time and talents to a variety of volunteer roles across the county.
Bríd Dilleen from Shanaway Road in Ennis was the recipient of the 2024 award. At an awards ceremony held last October, Bríd was praised for her extensive and impactful contributions across numerous roles, including her service as Treasurer for both Ennis Tidy Towns and Probus; her leadership as a founding member of the Banner Ladies Football Club and Chairperson of Banner GAA; and her compassionate work as an international volunteer for over 40 years with the One-to-One Children’s Charity.
Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, Councillor Alan O’Callaghan, is encouraging nominations from across County Clare to ensure volunteer’s like Bríd is recognised this year.
“This important annual award scheme showcases the vital role older people play in the voluntary sector and the wellbeing of County Clare. It encourages the continuation of this valuable work and inspires others to contribute to their communities. I want to commend the Clare Older People’s Council for its commitment to ensuring that a volunteering spirit prevails in our communities, particularly among our older citizens,” he said.
Chair of the Clare Older People’s Council Mary O’Callaghan said, “Now in its 10th year, this initiative honours the selfless dedication of our older volunteers, as well as their invaluable contributions to our communities and for inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. We look forward to welcoming nominees to our awards ceremony in Hotel Woodstock, where we will also be marking National Positive Ageing Week, which celebrates the positive aspects of ageing and the significant contributions that older people make to families, communities, workplaces, and society.”
Age Friendly Programme Manager for Clare County Council Shanelle Waring, commented, “Clare County Council is delighted to play its part in shining a spotlight on the countless hours, skills, and passion that volunteers contribute to communities across Clare. We are also proud to continue our close working relationship with the Clare Older People’s Council in developing Age Friendly policies and practices within the County itself as the demographic changes and the number of older people increases.”
Nomination forms are available on request from 065-6846240 or [email protected].
