The 28-year-old was travelling on Austrian Airlines flight OS-87 from Vienna to New York when it made an unscheduled landing in Shannon.

The crew reported they had a disruptive passenger on board and that they wished to land and have him removed from the aircraft.

The jet touched down in Shannon at 1.16pm and was met at the terminal by Airport Police Officers and members of An Garda.

The passenger, who is understood to hold a US passport, was arrested at the airport and taken to Shannon Garda station for questioning. Gardaí also consulted with the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The DPP has since decided that no proceedings will be initiated here as the the alleged incident occurred outside Irish airspace.

A Garda spokesman confirmed that the man will be deported once the necessary arrangements are finalised. The man will be detained at Limerick Prison until those arrangements have been confirmed.

The flight continued its journey to New York at 2.37pm.
