The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was called out this afternoon to assist a family on a cruiser that had suffered engine problems on Lough Derg.
At 2:50pm, the Irish Coast Guard was tasked to locate an assist a 38-foot cruiser reported to have suffered engine difficulties.
There were two adults and three children on board the vessel which was located 2km North of Killaloe. The skipper of the vessel dropped anchor to avoid drifting onto rocks and called the Irish Coast Guard for assistance.
Watch officers at the Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry alerted the Killaloe unit of the service.
A boat crew launched from Pier Head in Killaloe and made contact with the vessel within minutes. A crew member was transferred on board the casualty vessel and inspected the its engine and drive shaft.
It was decided however to take the vessel on tow back to Killaloe where a shore team had secured a mooring. At 4:10pm, the vessel was alongside in Killaloe with the help of the shore team.
At 4.30pm, the Coast Guard crew returned to base and readied the equipment for the next call.
