A van driver had a lucky escape this morning after his vehicle and trailer lost control and overturned on the M18 motorway.
The incident happened at around 10.50am northbound near Junction 10 at Newmarket on Fergus.
An orange Citroen van, hauling a trailer with a load of sand, appeared to jack-knife and plough into the central reservation.
Both the driver and passenger managed to escape from the overturned vehicle and sustained just minor injuries.
Emergency services, including units of the fire bridge from Shannon, responded to the incident and used traffic control measures to ensure no other vehicles ploughed into the crashed van and trailer.
Traffic Infrastructure Ireland (TII) motorway maintenance crews were also deployed to remove the sand from the road before it was declared safe again.
The route was fully reopened to traffic about an hour later.
