A man has had a lucky escape this evening after he was thrown overboard from an out-of-control boat in the Shannon Estuary.

The alarm was raised at around 7.20pm when a member of the public saw a small rigid inflatable boat (RIB) apparently out-of-control off Moneypoint.

The caller said they believed there was no one in the craft and couldn’t see anyone in the water.

The crew of the Kilrush RBLI lifeboat and the Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter were requested to mount a search of the area.

The volunteer lifeboat crew located the boat travelling around in circles however there was no sign of anyone in the water.

A short time later, staff at Moneypoint reported that a person had made it ashore safely and was being cared for by workers there.

The lifeboat crew took the boat on tow after it ran out of fuel and the engine stalled. The RIB was towed to Kilrush marina.

Its understood the man was exhausted but otherwise unharmed.
