Two people have been taken to hospital following a road traffic collision in West Clare this afternoon.
The two-car crash occurred at around 12.30pm at Doonmore on the main N67 Kilkee to Doonbeg road. The incident resulted in the route being closed to traffic.
Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Kilkee and Kilrush stations were mobilised to the incident along with National Ambulance Service paramedics and Gardaí.
Initial reports received by emergency services suggested that one of the vehicles had caught fire after the collision. On arrival at the scene however there was not fire. It’s believed that powder from airbags in one of the vehicles may have been mistaken for smoke.
Fire crews had to use specialist equipment to cut away a door on one of the vehicles so that they safely remove the injured male motorist. The driver and his female passenger were assessed at the scene before being removed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for further treatment.
The driver of the second car was uninjured.
The road was reopened at around 2.45pm when both vehicles had been recovered from the scene.
