Gardaí had been checking vehicles visiting the property while additional officers are expected to take up duty in Doonbeg later today.

A spokesman for the Doonbeg property confirmed that Mr Trump is in Clare “on business”.

The local community in Doonbeg is divided on plans by the Trump Organisation to construct flood defences to protect the golf course from sea erosion.

A revised planning application is awaiting a decision from Clare County Council while more than thirty people and groups lodged objections to the plan ahead of a deadline earlier this year.

Last night, a public meeting was held in the town to discuss the urgent need for flood defences to protect the golf course and local farm land.

The Doughmore Coastal Protection Group has expressed disappointment that a plan to erect a flood defence has not received planning permission.
