From Tuamgraney to Terryglass, the month is offering a selection of events that showcase Lough Derg as well as the food in the area. Visitors and locals are invited to take part in picnics, high teas, village tours, and chocolate making sessions conducted by the businesses that encircle the lake.

August weather brings back cooler evenings and fresh winds, and A Taste of Lough Derg brings in the summer harvest season. Visitors to our lake region in August will be treated to events featuring honey, edible flowers and orchard trips.

Ballina is host to two barbeque weekends in a row at Boruma and Flanagans on the Lake, while nearby Garrykennedy brings local foods and beers to the sound of local music in Larkins. The Lakeside Hotel in Killaloe offers tapas in the gardens with a glass of bubbly to wash them down, and an early trip to the orchard at Irish Seed Savers in Scarriff provides a parade of apples ripening in mid harvest season. As usual there’ll be Taste and Make sessions at Wilde Irish Chocolates in Tuamgraney before September brings more food experiences to enjoy around Lough Derg.

September wraps up the events with a bountiful harvest of foods and luxurious surroundings. To start the month, The Snug in Mountshannon offers a movie evening with pizza, while the closing event is a showcase of all things local from the Hidden Heartlands hosted in the Abbey Court, Nenagh, where one can shake hands and meet the producers. Ballina’s ‘Love Local’ event promises to be a great evening and the always excellent tapas event in Portumna is not to be missed.

A Taste of Lough Derg makes sure that if you skipped any event earlier in the summer, you will have an opportunity to catch them again in September, like chocolate sessions, village tours, and orchard trips.

A Taste of Lough Derg is coordinated by the Lough Derg Marketing Group to promote the Lough Derg Lakelands in conjunction with many of the food businesses and activity providers. Brochures for all of the events can be found at participating venues, at www.discoverloughderg.ie and on Facebook.
